The Express Entry (EE)

What is EE?
The EE is a system to manage the intake applications for permanent residence under one of the following economic immigration programs:
- The Federal Skilled Worker Program
- The Canadian Experience Class
- The Federal Trades Program

Through their nominee programs, Provinces and Territories in Canada can also select candidates from the EE pool to nominate them for permanent residence.

How does the EE work?

  • Eligible candidates (those who meet the criteria of one of the above noted economic programs) complete an online Express Entry profile;
  • Profiles are entered into a pool of candidates. Profiles will be valid for 12 months;
  • Candidates who do not have a full-time permanent job offer, supported by an approved Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), or a nomination certificate from a province or territory, may register with the job bank (optional). The job bank will help connect EE candidates with eligible employers in Canada;
  • Candidates in the pool will be ranked based on a point-based system known as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS);
  • Those who have an approved LMIA or a nomination certificate from a province or territory, will be awarded additional points of assessment, ranging between 50 & 600 points;
  • Citizenship and immigration will conduct regular draws from the pool, and send invitations to apply for permanent residence;
  • Candidates in the pool with the highest ranking scores and those with job offers based on LMIA or those who have a nomination certificate will be invited to apply for permanent residence;
  • Invited applicants for permanent residence will be required to submit a complete application for permanent residence within 90 days;
  • Failure to complete the application properly with all the required supporting documents will lead to the refusal of the application. Candidates will then have to return to the pool for re-selection.
  • Candidates in the Express Entry pool who do not receive an Invitation to apply for permanent residence after 12 months may resubmit their profile and re-enter the pool if they still meet the criteria. A re-assessment of their qualifications may be required, at that time.
